FOUND: THE ART OF DISCOVERY

Walking through the aisles of the local flea market or navigating your way through the clutter at an antique consignment shop off of Main Street, you can’t help but notice the piles of photos, long discarded and forgotten, offered up for sale. The found photograph draws us in with it’s borrowed sense of sentiment or sometimes lurid thrill of voyeurism, as we gaze into the mysterious lives of strangers through the lens of days long past.

Artists as different as Rodchenko, Gysin, Warhol and Cindy Sherman have repurposed found photography into their own works of art. With “Found: the Art of Discovery” we attempt to re-imagine the artistic role of photography through a collaborative dumpster dive of found photos and mixed media. Share your found, discovered or repurposed photographic works of art in this special exploratory exhibition of historic photos.

We are looking for a chance discovery here. A discarded photo that captures your eye, a recently unearthed or rediscovered photograph that has artistic and /or historic merit, or mixed media artwork that includes at least one piece of found or rediscovered photography.

Juror Matt Kelly selected a collection of found, rediscovered or repurposed photography for the FOUND exhibition which opened on September 24. There was no submission fee for this special event exhibition. Collectors and artists chose to list their pieces for sale, or only include them for display in the collection.
