IN MOTION

Time is an irreplaceable ingredient in the photographic cookbook. By its nature, photography captures a moment in time, via reflected light, and fixes it forever in static form to be viewed at our leisure. But just as Einstein tells us the speed of light can bend our perception of time, so too can the camera's shutter; and with a lot less math! By manipulating the speed of the shutter the camera can capture the dreamlike swirls of a ballerina's dance, the timeless flutter of a birds wings, or the fluid rhythm of water flowing through a cluster of rocks. With its long shutter speed the camera captures a wide swath of time and distills it into a single moment. And by using a very fast shutter speed or fast strobe the opposite effect can be achieved, such a bullet frozen in mid-flight popping a balloon, or the mid-air flight of a trapeze artist captured in tack-sharp detail.

This month at 1650 time stands still as we marvel at motion madness -- be it fast or slow, grand or mundane, sharp or smeared. But remember, don't take too long to get into gear, because this month time waits for no one at 1650, as we explore the acid trails of In Motion: Motion Photography!
