THIS AIN'T A SCENE
The vibrant music community of East L.A.

The East L.A. enclaves of Echo Park and Silver Lake have long been known as a place for artists, and the simple fact that on any given night of the week you can catch a solid lineup at a nearby dive is a sure sign that the local indie music scene is alive and kicking. Powered by a community of maverick musicians, weekend warriors, and day jobbers, the community is as much a cultural fixture to the City of Angels as taco stands and hipsters on Vermont.

"This Ain’t a Scene," a juried showcase of photographs depicting the vibrant indie music community of East Los Angeles, features images from live shows at performances at music festivals and venues such as The Echo, Pehrspace, The Silverlake Lounge, and The Satellite; band portraits, and intimate, behind-the-scenes photos taken with the subject unaware—on the tour van, in the dressing room, during rehearsal, by photographers who are as much music devotees as they are shutterbugs.

Sponsored by Echo Park’s 1650 Gallery in conjunction with Radio Free Silver Lake, the evening also will feature acoustic sets by a handful of local favorites. In many ways the burgeoning music community of East L.A. is a vestige of The Wild West, populated by talented, fearless mavericks with an eye toward unexplored terrain. THIS AIN'T A SCENE shines the spotlight on the local music scene, on the bands and the photographers who love them.
